Why the upper lip responds so well

Upper lip hair is usually dark and coarse against lighter skin, which is exactly the contrast a laser looks for. The energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair and converted to heat at the follicle, while the surrounding skin is protected by the Candela cooling system.

Because the area is small, each session takes about ten minutes, and most clients book it on a lunch break. Hair grows in cycles, so a series of six to eight sessions spaced several weeks apart treats each follicle while it is active. Individual results vary.

What a session is like

  1. Before. Shave the area the day before. Skip waxing, threading and plucking for four weeks beforehand, since the laser needs the hair root in place. Arrive with clean skin, no makeup or creams on the lip.
  2. During. You wear protective eyewear while your specialist adjusts the settings to your skin tone and hair, then treats the lip in a few quick passes. Most people describe a warm snap, like a rubber band, that fades within seconds.
  3. After. The skin may look slightly pink for an hour or two. Use sunscreen daily, avoid hot yoga, saunas and exfoliants for a day, and let treated hairs shed on their own over the following two weeks.

Does upper lip laser hair removal hurt?

Most clients find it very tolerable: a brief warm snap with each pulse, over in about ten minutes. The handpiece cools the skin as it treats. Tell your specialist if you would like the settings adjusted.

How many sessions does the upper lip need?

Most clients need six to eight sessions spaced several weeks apart, because the laser only affects hair in its growth phase. Hormonal hair, which is common on the lip and chin, sometimes needs occasional maintenance sessions afterwards. Individual results vary.

Can I get my upper lip treated if I have a darker skin tone?

Yes. Our Candela laser offers wavelengths suited to a wide range of skin tones, and your settings are chosen for you at a consultation before the first treatment.

Can I wear makeup afterwards?

Give the skin a few hours, then yes. Mineral makeup and sunscreen are fine the same day; save stronger products like retinol or acids for a couple of days later.
